Nasdaq & Dow Jones Index

The financial news often throws up various terms relating to the worldwide financial markets. But, when prompted, how many new investors could actually clearly state what many of the commonly used financial terms such as NASDAQ and Dow Jones (or Dow Jones Index) actually mean?

NASDAQ

NASDAQ stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation. Listing around 3,300 companies, NASDAQ is the largest US electronic stock market and takes in companies from all business sectors.

NASDAQ trades more share a day than any other US market and gives up-to-the-minute price quotations. Their business lines include NASDAQ Financial Products and NASDAQ Trading Services. Robert Greifeld is the current President and Chief Executive Officer of NASDAQ.

Dow Jones (Dow Jones Index)

The Dow Jones is an index that measures the stock market's performance. There are three main Dow Jones indices, The Dow Jones Transport Average, The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Dow Jones Utility Average. However, when the 'Dow Jones' is used it commonly refers to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. This average measures the performance of 30 of the largest public companies in the US.

In addition to the Dow Jones Industrial Average index, there is also the Dow Jones Total Market Index, which examines a larger range of companies.
