About shares
Companies often sell shares to raise finance for their business. When an investor buys shares in a company, they become co-owners of the company and they are entitled to dividends, a proportion of the distributed profits of a company.
Stocks and shares listed on the Stock Exchange are traded using the Stock Exchange CREST network. Stock and share prices can go up as well as down.
Types of shares
There are four key types of shares that companies may issue, each type gives the investor different rights:
- Ordinary shares
- Preference shares
- Cumulative preference shares
- Redeemable shares
Some investors who build a share portfolio choose to invest their stocks and shares into a Mini or Maxi ISA. There are rules as to how much you can invest in stocks and shares in a Maxi or Mini ISA in any tax year.
